WASHINGTON -- The White House Tuesday called on the U.S. Senate to schedule a vote on Judge Michael Mukasey's nomination as the next attorney general.
Mukasey appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee last week as part of the confirmation process but no vote has yet been scheduled.
"Senators on Capitol Hill have claimed that the Department of Justice is bereft of leadership and that they want somebody in there," White House spokeswoman Dana Perino told reporters. "And actually three of the main senators -- Sens. (Charles) Schumer, (Harry) Reid and (Patrick) Leahy -- have all said that Judge Mukasey would actually be the person that they would want to have in there."
