CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State University College of Agricultural Sciences is hosting its 25th annual art competition, "Art About Agriculture Tour 2007: By Land and By Sea."

The annual OSU College competition seeks art submissions that focus on the close connection of land and water in Pacific Northwest agriculture and fisheries, explained Shelley Curtis, curator of OSU's annual Art about Agriculture Tour.

"The college invites artists to consider both the sea and the land for exploring agriculture, including its challenges and its sense of romantic ideology," said Curtis. "We are welcoming artists to portray activities, people and the latticework of land, rivers and streams and the rugged shorelines of the Pacific Ocean.

"We would like to encourage observations of the cycles of abundance and scarcity, in fisheries and agriculture,” she added, “including shipping vessels that harvest and carry seafood and traditional agricultural products including dairy, food crops, plant nurseries and livestock ranching."

This regional juried competition is open to artists living in Alaska, British Columbia, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. Student artwork completed while enrolled in an educational curriculum is not eligible. All media in the visual fine arts and traditional crafts will be considered. Jurors for the 2007 competition include painter Margaret Coe, Eugene; printmaker and OSU professor of art, Yuji Hiratsuka, Corvallis; and M.J. Koreiva, executive director of the Coos Art Museum, Coos Bay.

The annual tour will be hosted by the OSU Memorial Union, mid-March to mid-May in Corvallis; The Tillamook County Pioneer Museum, late May through June in Tillamook; the Water Resources Education Center in Vancouver, Wash., in July and August. A selection of art from the tour will be on exhibit in the Gordon House in Silverton in September.
